Police Department Report

June 13th 2005

The following is a summary of activity for the Raisin Township Police Department for the month of May.

Significant Events:

Raisin Township Police Department has been invited to participate in several traffic enforcement initiatives by the state. By participating in this grant, we qualify for money from the state for overtime wages as well as a chance at $5000 equipment grants. At the end of the initiative we are also entered into a drawing for a new patrol car. This initiative started on May 23rd with seat belt enforcement and will include drunken driving initiatives in June.

The federal government has mandated that all fingerprints submitted after September 1st, 2006 must be submitted electronically. Currently we fingerprint on paper cards and mail them in. We will no longer be able to do this. The equipment to submit these electronic fingerprints costs around $26000. Since it is not practical for each department to spend this amount of money, the area Police Chiefs have looked at some other options.

The City of Tecumseh has qualified for a grant to offset the cost of a machine. The grant funds 50% of the original cost. The remaining money has to be paid by Tecumseh. Chief Mack Haun has proposed that the remaining funds be split as follows: 50% of the balance paid by City of Tecumseh ($6500). The remainder would be split equally between Raisin Township ($2166), Village of Clinton ($2166), and Cambridge Township ($2166). The machine will be housed and maintained by Tecumseh and available to us when we need it. I will provide more information when it comes available.

The State of Michigan has mandated the use of a new style Preliminary Breath Tester (PBT) used for breath testing on the roadside for drunk driving investigations. The two PBT’s that we are currently using will be phased out, as they need repair or replacement. The State of Michigan no longer has a contract with our current PBT manufacturer for repair or maintenance. Raisin Township has been awarded one new FC10 PBT through the Drunk Driving Prevention Equipment grant at no cost to us. We will receive this item prior to the end of August. I intend to submit another grant application for next year to replace the second PBT.

We have received a traffic control order from the State authorizing the placement of “No Parking” signs on Green Hwy. from Gady Rd. to Saxony Rd. and also from Gady Rd. 1325 feet west of Green. The County Road Commission will install the signs.
