Police Department Report

November 14th, 2005

The following is a summary of activity for the Raisin Township Police Department for the month of October.

Significant Events:

The Raisin Township Police Department assisted the Kapnicks Orchard Festival on October 8th and 9th with traffic control on Rogers hwy. The high volume of traffic has typically created a dangerous situation for motorists and pedestrians on Rogers hwy. The owners of Kapnicks Orchard met with township police officials for suggestions on how to make the area safer. Suggested changes were made prior to the event with an overall positive impact in safety.

Meetings:

Chief Lambka attended the Youth Alcohol Enforcement Forum held in Jackson on 10-05-05. This program is aimed at reducing underage drinking and is grant funded through the Michigan State Police. Our department has committed to supporting this enforcement with more details to come.

Chief Lambka attended an OHSP Traffic Enforcement Recognition banquet held in Lansing on October 26th. Our department was in a competition for a $35000 traffic grant to be awarded at this event. Unfortunately the grant was awarded to Elkington Police Department.

Sgt. Poe attended the Lenawee County Accident Investigators meeting at the LCSO on October 27th. Sgt. Poe is an experienced accident investigator and is currently a member of the multi-jurisdictional investigator team.

Training:

Sgt. Poe attended First Line Supervisor Training from MACNALOW Associates held at the Dearborn Heights Police Department on October 11th -13th.

Officer Wright and Sgt. Poe attended OHSP Traffic Enforcement training on October 25th and 26th in Lansing. This training was provided at no cost to the township through an OHSP grant.

Traffic Enforcement Update:

Raisin Township Police Department has continued to increase traffic enforcement on heavily traveled routes within the township. We have recently had an increase in complaints involving “gravel haulers” traveling on Rogers hwy. Residents in the area have noticed trucks traveling at high speeds almost daily. Officers have been instructed to crack down on any trucks found in violation. A notice has also been sent to the trucking company identified in the complaints.

We are currently working with several patrol car equipment providers to design a practical and cost efficient traffic enforcement car to replace our aging 2001 vehicle. The new vehicle will be designed specifically for traffic enforcement and will have a shorter turn radius to allow safer and quicker turnaround’s on our type of roadways. This vehicle will also have a lower profile lighting package and specially designed exterior markings to blend in with everyday traffic. Our goal is to increase the overall safety of township roads through aggressive traffic enforcement.

Shift Coverage Changes:

Effective December 6th, our department will start a new shift rotation that will place officers on duty more days per week. We will have 20 hours of coverage 6 days a week and 10 hours on the 7th day. This is a trial basis to help us determine peak call hours for coverage and give us better traffic enforcement at peak travel times.
